TREP, the TRansposable Elements Platform

Superfamily L1                   RIL

Full classification: Retrotransposon, non-LTR (SINE), L1

L1 elements are Class 1 transposons.

They are extremely well characterized and widespread in animals, plants, fungi and some other eukaryotes. Probably the most ubiquitous retrotransposon superfamily. Upon insertion, they create a variable bp Target site duplication (TSD).

Sequence domains

ORF1: ORF1 protein
Function: Guides mRNA/RT complex back into nucleus
Protein motifs: CCHC

APE: Apurinic endonuclease
Function:
Protein motifs:

RT: Reverse transcriptase
Function: Reverse transcription of mRNA to DNA, core motif is relatively variable (FY)(IAMV)DD
Protein motifs: YVDD

polyA: Poly-A tail
Function: Result of reverse transcription of mRNA. Sometimes, it is not a poly-A (weird stuff)
Protein motifs:
